Mike Van Dyne is the drummer for Nuclear Blast recording artists, Arsis. A founding member, he performed on the band’s two early demos in 2001 and 2002 (recorded during holiday breaks from Berklee College of Music), and on Arsis’ first three worldwide releases for Willowtip Records from 2004 through 2006. During this time, Van Dyne performed with Arsis on national tours with Misery Index, Incantation, Necrophagist, Neuraxis, Alarum, Becoming the Archetype, Dead to Fall, Misery Signals, The Faceless, All Shall Perish, Napalm Death, A Life Once Lost, and Animosity, as well as shows with Pyrexia, Six Feet Under, The Red Chord, Dying Fetus, Aghora, Job for a Cowboy, Full Blown Chaos, The Acacia Strain, and main-stage appearances at the 2006 New England Metal and Hardcore Fest (with Lacuna Coil, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Between the Buried and Me) and the First Annual California Metal Fest (also in 2006, with Sworn Enemy and Caliban). Van Dyne temporarily left Arsis in early 2007 to work toward his degree in the medical field. During this time, he performed briefly with the hardcore outfit Crimson Mask. In 2008, they released a 2-song digital single via the Metalhit label, and performed shows in upstate New York with Merauder, Madball, Wisdom in Chains, Burning Human, and Brick by Brick. In the spring of 2009, it was announced that Van Dyne would return to Arsis. The band entered Planet-Z Studios with acclaimed producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Agnostic Front, Shadows Fall) the following September, and recorded Starve for the Devil for Nuclear Blast Records. The album went on to land at No. 13 on the Billboard Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart for selling 1,800 copies in the U.S. during its first week of release. Van Dyne performed with Arsis on the Neckbreakers Ball European tour in October/November 2009 with Behemoth, Devildriver, and Scar Symmetry. He also performed with the band on the Tyrants of Evil tour of the U.S. and Canada in January/February 2010 with Arch Enemy, Exodus, and Mutiny Within. On March 6, 2010 Van Dyne performed with Arsis at the Eye Scream Metal Fest II in Mexico City (the band’s first ever performance in Latin America) with Sacred Reich, Cynic, Municipal Waste, and Dying Fetus. In November 2010, Van Dyne joined Arsis for an extensive European tour with Misery Index, Grave, The Last Felony, and The Rotted, followed by A Tour for the Sick - a U.S. headlining run in December with Powerglove and Conducting from the Grave. During their headlining tour, Arsis performed the 12+ minute track “A Diamond for Disease” in its entirety for the first time ever.
Van Dyne is currently working with Arsis on material for their next full-length release via Nuclear Blast Records. He is also a certified medical imaging technologist and an avid weight lifter.
